The AI Brand Tracker runs commercial prompts through ChatGPT at scale, millions of them across a million-plus categories, and publishes who gets recommended. We read the July 2026 top 50 line by line.

Four patterns fall out, and only one of them is "be enormous". The other three are copyable.

The leaderboard: recommendation traffic, prompt categories and average rank per site, public and searchable.

Pattern 1: assistants recommend places to finish the task

The top of the board is not publishers; it is destinations. Amazon leads outright, appearing across an extraordinary 568,000 prompt categories, with Etsy, Best Buy, Booking.com, Hotels.com and the hotel chains close behind.

The read: when a prompt has a transaction inside it, ChatGPT recommends where the transaction completes. Marketplaces, booking engines and service platforms like Angi and Thumbtack are the answer to "where do I actually do this", and the model knows it.

For everyone who is not a marketplace, the lesson is indirect: attach your pages to task completion. Content that ends in "here is exactly how and where to proceed" reads as a destination; content that ends in reflection reads as a detour.

Pattern 2: institutions own the trust categories

Health on the board is medlineplus.gov, clevelandclinic.org and nhs.uk. Legal is FindLaw, Justia and Nolo. Finance mixes the banks with Investopedia.

Non-commercial and institutional sources beating commercial ones inside commercial prompt flows is the model's trust bias made visible, the same lean the mention currency predicts. Where stakes are high, the assistant reaches for whoever looks most like an institution.

The copyable version: be the most institutional-grade source in your lane. Cited claims, updated dates, author credentials, sober tone: the furniture of authority is imitable at any size, and in smaller niches the bar is unclaimed.

Pattern 3: two winning shapes, breadth or depth

The shapeLeaderboard exampleSignature
BreadthBest Buy: ~183,000 categories, avg rank ~8Present almost everywhere, rarely first
DepthChewy: ~22,000 categories, avg rank 3.8One lane, near the top of it
DepthJustia: 764 categories, avg rank 4.6Tiny footprint, elite position

Chewy is the most instructive entry on the whole board: a fraction of Amazon's breadth, and the best average rank in the top 50, because within pet prompts it is practically the default. Justia repeats the shape in legal at a hundredth the size.

Depth is the achievable strategy. No niche site will out-breadth Amazon; any excellent niche site can pursue Chewy's shape inside its own category, which is the whole argument of the recommendation playbook.

Pattern 4: presence beats podium

Average ranks across the top 50 mostly sit between 6 and 10. These are the most-recommended sites on earth, and they are typically the sixth-through-tenth name in any given answer.

Recommendation lists are not winner-take-all the way position 1 was: answers name several options, users pick from the set, and being reliably in the set across thousands of prompts is what compounds. Chasing "first" misreads the surface; chasing "present and credible" matches how it actually pays.

Reading the board for your own niche

The leaderboard is searchable by category, which turns it from spectacle into research: look up your lane, see who owns it and with what shape, and set the target accordingly, the same competitive read you would run on a SERP, aimed at answers instead.

Then feed what you find into the standing system: the prompt set for what your buyers ask, the formats that get cited, and tracking to watch your own average rank move.

About this data

Figures are the AI Brand Tracker's estimates as of July 2026, built from large-scale prompt sampling; treat them as directional measurements of a moving system rather than exact counts. The tracker belongs to this site's network, which we disclose wherever it appears, and its leaderboard is public for exactly this kind of reading.

The one-line takeaway: the top 50 says assistants recommend destinations, trust institutions, and reward two shapes: everywhere-at-rank-eight or dominant-in-your-lane. You cannot copy Amazon's breadth; you can absolutely copy Chewy's depth and Justia's authority, one niche down.
